Republican Propoganda

Nope, not talking about the Bush Administration. The film "Legend of Zorro" is totally Republican propoganda. It's shoddy film structure attests to that (as well as the script.)
To wit:

1) Californians (Mexicans, Spanish, and Caucasians) want to join America when, in fact, it is mainly Caucasians who see it as profitable in order to continue with economic expansion. There are also black people wandering around, freely. They would have been slaves at the time since California hadn't declared that it was a free state. Becoming a state was a riot, not a peaceful process as depicted by the film. Mexicans/Spaniards did not want California to become part of the US. But, according to the film, they did so they would no longer be oppressed (hmmm...ring a bell?)

2) When the state came into being in the film, the flags flying were with 50 stars. Tsk, tsk.

3) They introduced a character as a member of the Confederate Army. The film takes place in 1850. The Confederate Army wasn't raised until 1861, after the secession.

4) The Bad Evil Dude? A French dude (do I need to elaborate)

5) Costumes were historically inaccurate (so sad. Wardrobe is usually on top of stuff like this. Sausage curls came in during the war, not before as did straightened bowties).

6) The fact that most of the action scenes were shot in front of a blue screen was blantantly obvious.

Good things about the film:

1) Rufus Sewell as the bad guy. He is, as usual, AMAZING
2) Antonio Banderas. Should I say more? The dude is HOT, can sing, and dance. Can we say triple threat?
3) The little kid. So cute and fun. He really holds the story together.
4) The priest who is supposed to be Spanish but who speaks with a Brooklyn accent. He's a Brooklynite trying to speak with a Spanish accent. It's fabulous.

However, to mitigate the film....
1) ::SPOLILERS!!!!::::The Pinkertons have Catherine Zeta Jones divorce Antonio Banderas in order to use her to get info on Armand (Sewell). They said they will go to any extent to save the United States. They also say the United States is, a phrase which did not make itself appearent until after the Civil War (thank you Schmitzy). But they were critiquing the methods which the US has taken in order to protect itself (from foreigners. Does anyone know if we were isolationist in 1850? All I remember about '50 was the passing of the Fugitive Slave Law which said any slave who ran away up North could be caught and taken South so all slaves had to run to Canada (which turned Buffalo into a major thruway for the underground railroad. But they are getting their first black mayor. Interesting)). Cali already had Willie Brown--but then again, that's San Francisco.

It's not a good movie. They even stole lines from Indiana Jones. "It belongs in a museum. And so do you."
Also, the train fight scene wasn't any good. Come to think of it, since "From Russia with love," have there been a lot of good train fight scenes? I mean, that Bond movie was the first (right?) and it was pretty fabulous. Have there been any other good ones?

This is awesome. Film is getting dumber and dumber - perhaps reflecting the failing intelligence of the general population? Or, perhaps illustrating the increasingly dictatorial nature of the government.
No. No, it must just be that people are getting dumber. Yah...that's it.....

::bows::
in other news, china isnt releasing "memoirs of a geisha" cuz theyre afraid their people are gonna go eat ken watanabe. and that would make japan angry.
then you risk japan coming into china and killing somewhere b/w 150,000 and 300,000 people, you know, like they did in WWII.
OY.
